I'm interested in finding the next big thing. Every now and then a new technology pops up claiming it will change everything, but the time showed that only a few innovations had a deep impact on the tech development.
Estimating the importance even for the biggest innovations at the time they were created, was never easy. A neat example is the steam engine. The basic mechanism is known since the 1st century (history of the steam engine), but the real impact has been observed during the 17th century when the world's economy and the whole society felt a need for more efficient manufacture.
Over the last few decades, we observe a huge technological leap, but on the other hand, a huge hype that follows every new technological innovation like cryptocurrencies, IoT, machine learning, self-driving cars etc. For some of the recent innovations, I strongly believe there are brilliant ideas behind, but the rest is just technological junk made to create profit or fame for their creators.
I'm not that smart to predict what is the next big thing, but I'll question the current technology and try to motivate discussion on whether or not a certain innovation is really a breakthrough or just a temporary hype.
Beyond The Hype is trying to analyze popular tech topics and answer Where do they fit in the long run?
